We are the Year 2 class at Badger Hill Primary School in York. Our teacher is Mrs Harland and our class teaching assistants are Mrs Walker and Mr O’Leary. We are also supported by our class volunteer Miss Nicholls. On a Thursday morning, Mrs Burnett provides PPA cover. The additional adults in our classroom are invaluable to us - as they are able to support us in ensuring that all children are able to reach their potential. You can follow our learning and find useful information here on our class web page.
We also use Twitter to share our exciting work and love of learning. You can follow us @BadgerHillYork2
Things you should know.
The children are expected to learn spellings for a spelling quiz that takes place on a Friday morning. In the autumn term, a list of differentiated topic spellings will be given out to practice at home. As the children move closer to the Summer Term, the list will be replaced with key spelling patterns and rules to learn, practice and apply. Spellings will be updated on Spelling Shed each week for the children to practice.
In addition, every class in Badger Hill takes part in times table quizzes each Friday. Children start by learning their tens in their Bronze 10 award and move up once they have shown they can answer 40 questions in 4 minutes! This is a fun quiz where children are encouraged to better their score each week. Children are encouraged to use TTRockstars at home to support their learning.
Reading is an essential part of Year 2 homework and children are expected to read for 5 minutes with an adult at home, each day. All reading, whether on BugClub, a school reading book or a book from home, should be noted in the children's reading diary. Raffle tickets are given out as a reading reward and the reading raffle is drawn each Friday.
Children should bring a named water bottle every day. In Year 2, we have a saying – we need to drink, to think!
PE will be taught on a Tuesday and a Thursday. Please ensure all children have their named PE kit on their peg ready for these sessions.
At Badger Hill Primary School, our curriculum is based on the 2014 National Curriculum in England. This consists of the core subjects: English, Maths and Science and the foundation subjects: Art, Design and Technology, Computing, Geography, History, Music and Physical Education. We ensure that our children develop a secure grounding the basic skills of reading, writing, spelling, grammar and maths, which enables them to learn well in all subjects. We also ensure that our pupils have the skills they need to be a successful member of our modern British society. We ensure they have an understanding of different beliefs and cultures and learn tolerance and respect towards others. We ensure they understand the difference between right and wrong and the consequences that their actions can have. The curriculum in Year 2 supports pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.
Year 2 is the end of Key Stage One, and we have to ensure that pupils are well prepared to make the move to Key Stage Two at the end of the year.
Mrs Harland will update our class page each term with an overview of the upcoming topics that will be covered as well as objectives your child will be expected to achieve in reading, writing, maths and science.
